RESUMO As indústrias têxteis, durante o processo de tingimento, liberam uma grande quantidade de corantes na água. Além do seu efeito visual e seus impactos adversos em relação à fotossíntese e demanda química de oxigênio, muitos corantes sintéticos são tóxicos, recalcitrantes, mutagênicos e carcinogênicos. Dessa forma, novas alternativas de tratamento dos efluentes gerados, menos agressivas ao meio ambiente, de baixo custo e renováveis tem sido buscadas, como o uso de resíduos agroindustriais lignocelulósicos, como adsorventes de corantes. Neste estudo, cana-de-açúcar e fibras de coco foram estudadas quanto à capacidade de adsorver o corante Remazol Brilliant Blue BB e investigar os efeitos do tempo, pH, quantidade de material adsorvente e concentração de corante na adsorção do corante. O melhor tempo de adsorção foi de 24 h para fibra de coco e 12 h para fibra de cana-de-açúcar. Para ambas as fibras, o pH ótimo para a adsorção do corante foi 2, e o uso de 20 g L-1 de fibra foi o mais efetivo para remover 50-200 mg L-1 de Remazol Brilliant Blue BB, com porcentagens de adsorção acima 90,50% observados para ambas as fibras.

ABSTRACT The textile industries, during the dyeing process, release a large amount of dyes in the water. In addition to its visual effect and its adverse impacts on photosynthesis and chemical oxygen demand, many synthetic dyes are toxic, recalcitrant, mutagenic and carcinogenic. In this way, new alternatives of treatment of the generated effluents, less aggressive to the environment, of low cost and renewable have been sought, as the use of lignocellulosic agricultural residues, like dyes adsorbents. In this study, sugar cane and coconut fibers were studied for their ability to adsorb Remazol Brilliant Blue BB dye, and the effects of time, pH, amount of adsorbent material and dye concentration on dye adsorption were investigated. The optimal adsorption time was 24 h for coconut fiber and 12 h for sugar cane fiber. For both fibers, the optimal pH for the adsorption of dye was 2, and the use of 20 g L-1 of fiber was the most effective for removing 50-200 mg L-1 of Remazol Brilliant Blue BB, with adsorption percentages of above 90.50% observed for both fibers.

The aim of this work was to study the phytochemical and antifungal activity of anthraquinones and root and leaf extracts of Coccoloba mollis on phytopathogens. The chemical analysis of ethanolic extracts showed a mixture of long-chain hydrocarbons, carboxyl esters and 3-taraxerone in the leaf extract. Two anthraquinones (emodin and physcion) were isolated and identified from the root extract. Phytochemical screening using the pharmacognostic methods revealed the presence of flavonoids and tannins in the leaves and roots. Anthraquinones were only found in the root extract, no alkaloids, coumarins, saponins and simple phenolics were present. The antifungal activity of C. mollis extracts and anthraquinones isolated from the root of this plant against Botryospheria ribis, B. rhodina, Lasiodiplodia theobromae and Fusarium sp showed promising results for their use as fungicides, where emodin was the most active compound, which inhibited the microorganisms tested up to 44%.

Bagaço de cana-de-açúcar foi utilizado como substrato para a produção de xilanase pelo Trichoderma harzianum Rifai, isolado previamente de peroba (Aspidosperma sp) em decomposição. Após ter sido lavado, seco e moído, o bagaço foi umedecido com meio mínimo de Vogel e autoclavado. Dois métodos de extração foram avaliados para recuperação da enzima: (A) Tween 80 0,1% em salina fisiológica (v/v) e (B) tampão acetato pH 5 (50mM) sob agitação (180rpm) durante 15, 30 e 60 minutos. Em média, foram recuperados 15U/ml de atividade xilanásica com ambos os extratores, após uma única extração, independente do tempo de agitação. Uma segunda e terceira reextrações recuperaram 10,4 e 6,6U/ml, respectivamente. O efeito de diferentes volumes de extração e a concentração de bagaço de cana para a produção da xilanase também foram investigados. A curva de crescimento de Trichoderma harzianum foi avaliada durante 20 dias e a maior atividade xilanásica (288U/ml) foi obtida no sétimo dia de cultivo. O extrato enzimático, após precipitação com sulfato de amônio, foi submetido à eletroforese em gel de poliacrilamida e apresentou 4 bandas de proteína, das quais apenas uma demonstrou atividade xilanásica.

Sugarcane bagasse was used as substrate for xylanase production by means of a strain of Trichoderma harzianum Rifai isolated from decaying Aspidosperma sp. (peroba) wood. The bagasse was washed, dried, milled and wetted with minimal salts medium and the cultures grown at 28 ± 2ºC for 7 days. Two extraction methods were tested for enzyme recovery: (A) Tween 80, 0.1% (v/v), in physiological saline, and (B) 50mM sodium acetate buffer, pH 5.0, under agitation (180rpm) for 15, 30 and 60min. After a single extraction, both extraction methods recovered an average of 15U/ml of xylanase activity, independent on the time of shaking. A second and third extraction recovered 10.4 and 6.6U/ml xylanase, respectively. The effect of volume size for extraction, and sugarcane bagasse concentration, on xylanase production were also investigated. The growth profile of Trichoderma harzianum was followed over 20 days on 14% (w/v) bagasse, and highest xylanase activity (288U/ml) appeared on the seventh day. The enzymatic extract after precipitation with ammonium sulphate was submitted to electrophoresis on polyacrylamide gels and showed 4 protein-staining bands, one of which exhibited xylanase activity.

Objetivo. Descrever os valores de referência para chumbo em sangue em uma população urbana do Município de Londrina, Estado do Paraná, Brasil. Métodos. A população de referência foi constituída por 520 voluntários adultos avaliados de novembro de 1994 a dezembro de 1996. Os critérios de exclusão foram: exposição ocupacional ao chumbo, exposição através de hábitos, fumar mais de 10 cigarros por dia e morar perto de indústrias ou de locais que utilizam o chumbo em seus processos produtivos. Também foram excluídos indivíduos com valores de exames clínicos e laboratoriais fora da normalidade, doenças crônicas e distúrbios cardiovasculares. Os teores de chumbo em sangue foram determinados por espectrofotometria de absorção atômica com chama de ar-acetileno. O limite de detecção obtido foi 1,23 mig/dL. Após as análises de chumbo em sangue, foram determinados valor mínimo, primeiro quartil, mediana, terceiro quartil e valor máximo; média geométrica; intervalo de confiança de 95%; intervalo experimental; e valor de referência. Resultados. Os valores de referência para plumbemia variaram de 1,20 a 13,72 mig/dL. A média geométrica foi igual a 5,5 mig/dL. Conclusões. Em geral, os valores obtidos no presente estudo são mais baixos do que aqueles obtidos em outros países. Estudos adicionais deveriam enfocar a obtenção de valores de referência em outras populações brasileiras que vivem em regiões mais industrializadas.

Objective. To describe the reference values for lead in blood in an urban population in the city of Londrina, in the state of Paraná, Brazil. Materials and methods. The reference population was composed of 520 adult volunteers who were assessed from November 1994 to December 1996. Exclusion criteria were: occupational exposure to lead, exposure through personal habits or practices, smoking more than 10 cigarettes per day, and living near industrial plants or other places that use lead in their production processes. Also excluded were individuals with abnormal clinical or laboratory results or with chronic diseases or cardiovascular disorders. Lead blood levels were determined using air-acetylene flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The detectable limit was 1.23 mug/dL. After the analyses of lead in blood, the following values were determined: minimum value, first quartile, median, third quartile, and maximum value; geometric mean; 95% confidence interval; experimental interval; and reference value. Results. The reference values for lead in blood ranged from 1.20 mug/dL to 13.72 mug/ dL. The geometric mean was 5.5 mug/dL. Conclusions. In general, the values found in this study are lower than those that have been reported for other countries. Additional data should be gathered from Brazilian populations living in more-industrialized areas.
